What is Katsure Castle Ruins?

The ruins of a castle built on a hill at the base of the Katsuren Peninsula in the central part of Okinawa's main island.

The ruins of Katsuren Castle are famous as the residence of the powerful local castle lord, Amawari, who resisted the Kingdom of Ryukyu during its stabilization process. In 2000, it was registered as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, "Gusuku and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu".

How to play at Katsuren Castle Ruins

The natural topography of the castle, with its elevation ranging from 60m to 98m, and its skillfully constructed walls, make it an iron fortress, and the process of climbing up on foot also offers scenic views.

Climbing to the top, known as the first kurin (kuruma), offers a 360-degree panoramic view that is one of the most spectacular views of any gusuku in Okinawa, and the view is one of the reasons for the popularity of this site.
