What is a gusuku (castle) selected as a World Cultural Heritage site?
What kind of image do you have of Okinawa?
The impressions held may be diverse: the southernmost prefecture, a remote tropical island, a warm subtropical climate, beautiful sea and sandy beaches, a fusion of American culture, and so on.
Today Okinawa is a major tourist prefecture, centering on Naha City, a government-designated city, and Onna Village, a resort area along the central west coast, and is an everlasting summer island loved by many people.
Okinawa Prefecture has become a familiar tourist destination for many people, with many people citing it as their number one travel destination in Japan.
Okinawa Prefecture is now counted as one of the prefectures, but it was once a foreign country with a culture different from that of Japan as the Ryukyu Kingdom.
It was invaded by the Satsuma clan in 1609 and remained a Ryukyuan kingdom until 1879, when it was declared the prefecture of Okinawa.
Gusuku (castles) remain today as proof of a country that has weaved together different cultures and traced its history.
It is also registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as "Gusuku and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu," and its historical value is very significant.
In this issue, we would like to introduce some of the gusuku that are scattered throughout Okinawa Prefecture.
5 Gusuku (castles) you can see in Okinawa
There are five gusuku in Okinawa.
Check out the features and attractions of each.
Shuri Castle (in Kyoto)
The most famous of Okinawa's gusuku is Shuri Castle, once the symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Many of you may have seen the vermilion gates and castles, which resemble Chinese structures, in books or on television.
Access from Onna Village
Shuri Castle is located at 1-2 Shuri Kinjo-cho, Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture.
If you are traveling by rental car, which is the basic method of travel in Okinawa, you can search for "Shurijo Park" on your car navigation system.
If you take the bus, get off at the bus stop "Shurijo Koen Iriguchi" and Shurijo Castle is right in front of you.
Attractions/Features
When you hear the name Shuri Castle, you may think of the fire that occurred in 2019.
It was a major fire that destroyed six buildings, including the main hall.
In fact, Shuri Castle had been lost four times before that in history, and most of the buildings that remain today were reconstructed in the first place.
The original building was constructed at the end of the 14th century as the residence of the king of Ryukyu and his family, but that no longer remains.
Since the destruction by fire is part of the history of Shuri Castle, it is well worth seeing the castle as it is being restored from the fire.
The Sonohiyanutaki Ishimon (Stone Gate), located on the grounds of Shurijo Castle, was once a place of worship frequented by royalty.
This is safely in existence, and we recommend that you visit it as well, as you will be able to see it in its full glory.

Nakagusuku Castle is one of a group of gusuku that were built when the Ryukyu Dynasty was still alive and well.
The castle structure here is considered to be characterized by its use of the natural terrain, and the rocks can be seen to have been meticulously piled up in a way that skillfully fits the original land.
Access from Onna Village
The address of Nakagusuku Castle is 503 Oshiro, Kitanakagusuku Village, Nakagami County, Okinawa Prefecture.
If you set your navigation system to "Nakagusuku," the route will be clearly displayed, so there is no risk of getting lost.
It is somewhat far from the nearest bus stop, and after getting off at the "Kuba" bus stop, it takes about 30 minutes on foot to reach the entrance reception of Nakagusuku Castle.
Attractions/Features
This Nakagusuku Castle is considered one of the best-preserved gusuku still standing in Okinawa, and features beautiful stone walls piled with Ryukyu limestone.
Ryukyu limestone is formed from coral on the ocean floor that has been uplifted and transformed into rock over time, and it is the coral stone walls that support Nakagusuku Castle, so to speak.
The view is also very good. Nakagusuku Castle used to be a castle that was easy to defend and difficult to attack due to its good visibility and robust construction.
In addition, "Gathering to See Wakateda" is held at Nakajo Castle during the winter solstice season.
Waka-tida" means "young tida" and "tida" means the sun, and this event allows visitors to experience the Okinawan belief that the sun is reborn on the winter solstice.
Zakimi Castle
One of the prominent authorities of the former Kingdom of Ryukyu was a man named Gosamaru.
Gosamaru, a native of Onna Village and known as a man of loyalty, was also a master castle builder and is known for his involvement in the construction of several gusuku.
Among the gusuku built by Gosamaru, Zakimi Castle, built in the early 15th century, was considered to be one of the most beautiful works of art.

The address of Zakimi Castle is 708-6 Zakimi, Yomitan Village, Nakagami County, Okinawa Prefecture.
Today, the castle itself does not remain, and "Zakimi Castle Ruins" is the name of the place.
This does not affect car navigation searches, but it is important to keep this in mind.
The nearest bus stop is "Zakimi", from which the approximate walking time is 15 minutes.
Attractions/Features
As mentioned above, unfortunately, the castle portion of Zakimi Castle is not extant.
However, Gosamaru's outstanding castle-building skills are preserved in the sight of the stone walls, which are both beautiful as tidy ramparts and graceful in a way reminiscent of works of art, exuding elegance.
石垣と聞くと、よほどの城マニア以外は見ても楽しめないのではないかと思われるかもしれませんが、知識がなくても感動を得られること請け合いです。
また小高くなった敷地からは残波岬や慶良間諸島を一望することができ、ロケーションという点でも絶好のスポットとなっています。
Katsuren Castle
琉球王国の歴史の中でも歴史愛好家たちのロマンをかきたてる存在が、阿麻和利（あまわり）という人物です。
東アジアとの積極的な貿易を行ったり、護佐丸を自害させたりと歴史書に頻繁に名を見せ、最後は王位簒奪を目指して首里城へと攻め上がり大敗してしまったと伝えられています。
その阿麻和利が10代目の城主を務めていたのが勝連城です。

勝連城の住所は、沖縄県うるま市勝連南風原3908。
カーナビ検索は、古いカーナビだと施設名で上手くルートが表示されないケースが多いようです。
マップコードか電話番号での検索が、勝連城跡のホームページで推奨されています。
マップコードは499 570 238*21、電話番号は0989787373ですので、いずれかを利用するようにしましょう。
バス利用に関しては「勝連城跡前」というバス停がありますので、わかりやすい立地となっています。
Attractions/Features
ここも城は現存しておらず、現在の名称は勝連城跡となっています。
しかし1つ、2つ、3つ、4つと階段のように連なった曲輪（くるわ）からは、築城当時の琉球王国の実戦に備えた城作りという思想を窺い知ることができる点が面白いところ。
特に一の曲輪は眺望が良く、金武湾と沖縄の山々、いくつかの離島を北側に望むことができ、知念半島、久高島、中城城跡などを南に見晴らせる景勝地となっています。
世界遺産として登録されているグスク群では最古のものであり、琉球王国の歴史の深みを存分に感じ取ることができるでしょう。
Nakijin Castle
最後にご紹介させていただくのは、13世紀に築城されたと考えられている今帰仁城（なきじんじょう）です。
考えられている、という曖昧な書き方は、このグスクを築城した人物に諸説あり正確なところがわかっていないため。
有力な説は琉球王国成立以前の「三山県立の時代」に北山王という人物が築いたというものですが、説の域を出ていないそうです。

今帰仁城の住所は、沖縄県国頭郡今帰仁村字今泊4874。
カーナビ検索は「今帰仁城跡」で問題ありません。
最寄りのバス停は「今帰仁城跡入口」で、下車すれば目の前にあります。
Attractions/Features
今帰仁城の特徴はその広さ。
面積は王城であった首里城と近く、城内の郭は外郭を含めて七つを数えます。
ここも城自体は現存していないのですが、広い敷地に見合っただけの数多くの見所に溢れています。
ボランティアの解説スタッフが常駐しているのも嬉しいポイントで、チケット売り場で希望すればガイドの方の解説を受けながら回ることができ、今帰仁城観光に深みが増すでしょう。
また、春には城壁のライトアップを含む桜まつりが開催されます。
照明やロウソクで彩られたグスクは幻想的な美しさを見せてくれますので、時期が合えばぜひ足を運んでみてください。

シュノーケルをご紹介したところで、沖縄のマリンアクティビティといえば、ダイビングも外せません。
酸素タンクやレギュレーターを身に着け、より深い海へとより長時間のダイブに挑戦できるのがダイビングです。
基本的には、ライセンスを取得しなければ遊ぶことができないハードルの高さが若干ネックとなるのですが、恩納村には体験ダイビングを楽しめるスポットが点在しています。
体験ダイビングとは、インストラクター同伴で規定の範囲内の深度まで潜ることができるというもので、ダイビングの魅力をしっかりと体感することが可能です。
シュノーケルと比べても息継ぎの必要がないという点が大きなメリットで、自分が海中の住人になったかのような素敵な感覚を味わえますよ。
ダイビングが気に入った方は、そのまま恩納村で行われているダイビング講習に参加してライセンス取得を目指してみるのもいいかもしれませんね。
SUP
さまざまなアクティビティの中でも屈指のオシャレ度を誇るのがSUPです。
SUPとはStand Up Paddleboardの頭文字を並べたものであり、ボードの上に立って海に浮き、パドルでそれを漕いでいくというのがアクティビティの内容。
単純そうに聞こえるかもしれませんが、ボード一枚で海面に立つのは想像する以上に効率的な全身運動となってくれます。
エクササイズ効果が極めて高く、元はハワイのサーファー発祥だったものが欧米のセレブ層に人気が出て、世界的なアクティビティになったという経緯がSUPにはあるのです。
さて、SUPが近年人気を高めている理由は、Instagramが盛んになったからという理由が挙げられます。
海面にボード一枚で立つ光景はスマートかつスタイリッシュで、さらに夕暮れの時間ともなると素敵なシルエット写真を撮ることが可能なのがSUPの良さ。
インスタ映えを求める若年層に人気が爆発し、沖縄においても需要が大いに高まっているのです。

Canoe/Kayak
小舟の上でゆったりと恩納村の海を眺める時間を楽しみたい方には、カヌー・カヤックがオススメです。
カヌーやカヤックといえばアスリートが激しく船を漕ぐ姿を思い浮かべられる方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、アクティビティとしてのカヌー・カヤックはとてものどかに楽しめます。
安定性が高いため転覆することもほぼありませんし、ライフジャケット着用での乗船なため泳げない方でも心配は無用です。
二人乗りができる点も嬉しいところで、まだ幼く一人で乗るのは難しいお子様でも一緒に乗ってあげれば海上の光景を楽しませてあげることができてしまいます。
透明な恩納村の海は船の上から見下ろしても極めてクリア。
サンゴや熱帯魚たちのカラフルな姿を堪能することができますよ。
marine sports
沖縄の海を華々しく楽しめる手段の筆頭といえば、多種多様なマリンスポーツ。
水上バイクで海上を豪快に突き進むのも良いですし、ハイスピードで牽引されてスリルと水しぶきを味わえるバナナボートやビッグマムも大人気です。
恩納村にはリゾートホテルが多く、その傍らにあるビーチではマリンスポーツのツアーが開催されているケースが多くなっています。
安全管理も行き届いているため、安心して参加することができますよ。
水上バイクで凧揚げのように牽引してもらえるパラセーリングや水圧で空中を舞うフライボードなど上からの視点を楽しめるものもあり、大変オススメとなっています。
